Bollywood’s Novel Ways

Bollywood is increasingly banking on literature to gain a foothold in global cinema. Filmmakers are looking at a slew of award winning books that have a huge fan base of their own, as it helps build the curiosity factor around a film.

As they say, never judge a book by its movie! So let’s take a trip down Bollywood history to find five novel adapted movies that have made it big in Bollywood.

Devdas: When we talk about films based on books, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Devdas is the first one that comes to mind. Did you know this film has had around five adaptations in Hindi? Out of these five, the one directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali stands out. Its leading stars Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai got several accolades for their performances. The film received commercial as well as critical success.

Guide: It the finest movies to come out of Bollywood and considered a masterpiece by many. Guide brought together the evergreen, Dev Anand, and the gorgeous Waheeda Rehman. The story revolved around a footloose guide who falls in love with a beautiful danseuse. The screenplay of the movie was adapted from R. K. Laxman’s novel, The Guide. Guide was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007.

3 Idiots: Considered to be the most successful Hindi film, in terms of box office returns, 3 Idiots touched on the issue of cramming versus real knowledge in educational institutions. The performances by the three main protagonists, especially Aamir Khan’s, is highly appreciated. Though the screenplay was loosely adapted from Chetan Bhagat’s Five Point Someone, the author had an issue with the filmmakers for not giving him due credit which resulted in a minor controversy.

Umrao Jaan: The story of Umrao Jaan, a famous Lucknow courtesan, gave Rekha the opportunity to essay one of her finest performances to date. Adapted from the Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada by Mirza Hadi Ruswa, the film was directed by Padma Shri awardee Muzaffar Ali and depicted the rise and fall of the ethereal courtesan. Unforgettable songs such as Dil Cheez Kya Hai were the highlights of the film, apart from Rekha’s powerhouse performance.

Omkara: The movie had been adapted from the famous Shakespeare play, Othello. Director Vishal Bhardwaj loves making adaptations.  This movie had actors like, Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Vivek Oberoi, Konkona Sen Sharma and Bipasha Basu in it. Saif’s performance as Langda Tyagi in the movie was highly appreciated and it is considered to be his best till date.

With the success of films adapted from books, it seems like an increasing number of bestsellers are being adapted for the big screen every year. A few of the recent and upcoming adapted movies include Abhishek Kapoor’s Kai Po Che, Karan Johar’s Shiva, Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet and Sanjay Gupta’s Shootout At Wadala.
